A school in Myo Ywar village, part of Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township, is badly damaged and requires a major reconstruction effort, according to its headmaster.
The school was built in 1982, and today has a bamboo floor, corrugated metal roof, and tarpaulin for walls.
U Sein Aung, the school’s headmaster, said the building has been damaged for nearly 20 years.
“The school was not built by the state. It is a self-help building. The plan to repair the building was submitted to the government, but no response was made. Other organisations did not help. The building is extremely damaged and needs to be rebuilt,” U Sein Aung said.
He said he would like to rebuild the school as soon as possible because the building’s bamboo floor is badly damaged and is a danger to students and education personnel.
“I’d like to request that it be rebuilt. Students from kindergarten and Grade 1 have to sit on the ground at the moment,” he added.
DMG phoned U Ba Htwe Sein, the Arakan State Education officer, seeking comment on rebuilding the school, but he responded that he could only provide comment after receiving authorisation from his superiors.
Myo Ywar is an ethnic Khami village, and there are 63 students at the school, where five teachers are employed.
