A civilian was killed and three others were injured when junta artillery fire struck Than Seik village in Shwegyin Township, Bago Region, on Tuesday.
Regime troops and resistance forces led by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) clashed near the village from 5 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
“During the fighting, the Myanmar military fired more than 10 artillery shells at the village. An elderly person was killed, and three others were badly injured in the shelling,” said a resident of Than Seik village.
The fighting flared as the combined forces of the KNLA and anti-junta groups attacked a regime outpost near Than Seik village, according to locals.
The outpost was seized by the KNLA, but the regime sent reinforcements to retake control of the outpost, according to a source from the Karen National Union (KNU), the political wing of the KNLA.
“Around 50 junta reinforcements have entered through the village to take back control of the outpost,” said the source. Details on the status of the attempt to regain control of the outpost were unknown at the time of publication.
More than 3,000 locals have fled into the surrounding forests following the fighting near Than Seik village, according to volunteers helping those displaced.
