Students in Ramree Twsp village struggle with shortages of teaching materials

Students in Htautkyanttaw Village, Ramree Township, Arakan State, are facing severe educational difficulties due to shortages of teaching materials, according to local residents.

Htautkyanttaw Village has 34 students enrolled from kindergarten through Grade 5. Of them, 25 do not have complete sets of textbooks and must share them with classmates. In addition, an insufficient supply of whiteboards is hampering classroom instruction.

“As parents face severe poverty, many students do not own textbook sets, which cost K60,000 per set,” U Myint Win, a schoolteacher stationed in Htautkyanttaw Village, told DMG. “Students must share textbooks with those who have them. A lack of whiteboards also creates major challenges for teaching.”

Htautkyanttaw Village is a remote community where local residents depend on forest foraging and hill farming for their livelihoods.

Due to widespread poverty, parents struggle to keep their children in school, forcing school-aged children to drop out each year to join the workforce.

“With job opportunities scarce and household incomes low, supporting a student is very difficult,” a parent from Htautkyanttaw Village said. “Parents often pull their children out of school midway to send them to work.”

In addition, residents of Htautkyanttaw Village face healthcare challenges due to the village's remote location and poor transportation infrastructure.

As Htautkyanttaw Village residents face hardships across multiple sectors, relief workers are calling for humanitarian assistance.

“As this area is remote, aid workers rarely reach it,” an official from the Yammar Myay IDP Assistance Group told DMG. “We appeal to donors to assist these students who struggle to learn due to insufficient teaching materials.”

The United League of Arakan (ULA) is systematically developing the education sector and providing educational support across Arakan State during this academic year.

However, remote villages such as Htautkyanttaw Village continue to suffer from major deficiencies in both education and healthcare.
