The United League of Arakan (ULA), the political wing of the Arakan Army, attended the 75th Diamond Jubilee Union Day ceremony held on February 12 in Naypyidaw.
Six people, including U Oo Hla Saw, a former Pyithu Hluttaw lawmaker from Mrauk-U Township, attended the event as the ULA’s delegation. They attended the ceremony as a show of respect because the party was invited, U Oo Hla Saw told DMG.
“We cannot disclose the names of other officials who attended the event. They represented the ULA,” U Oo Hla Saw said.
U Khaing Thukha, a spokesperson for the ULA/AA, confirmed that a delegation led by U Oo Hla Saw attended the Union Day ceremony in a message uploaded to his social media page.
“As for ULA/AA, we pay regard to the interests of the people. We are acting with practical compromise after taking into consideration the needs of the people,” U Khaing Thukha wrote.
Myanmar’s military regime on February 6 invited ethnic armed organisations (EAOs) that signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement and EAOs that have yet to sign the NCA to attend the Diamond Jubilee Union Day event and a “pre-coordination meeting on perpetual peace talks.”
On February 12, the junta announced that it was closing the ongoing legal cases of 46 people accused of having illegal ties to the Arakan Army.
In an order signed by Lieutenant General Aung Lin Dwe, secretary of the regime’s State Administration Council, the decision was described as intended to honour the Diamond Jubilee Union Day, as well as “ensuring durable peace.”
Delegations for seven NCA signatories and four non-signatories attended the Union Day ceremony.
