The Arakan Army (AA) seized the military’s Buthidaung-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 564 on the morning of April 5, the ethnic armed group said in a statement.
The AA launched an assault on the military’s LIB 564 on April 1 and took control of the military regiment four days later.
At least 80 regime soldiers were killed and a haul of weapons and other military equipment were seized during the capture of the military regiment, the AA statement said.
The statement added that the Arakan Army solemnly honours the Arakha soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the fighting.
The AA seized the outpost of Light Infantry Battalion No. 552 on March 25, and has been attacking to seize others in the days since.
LIB Nos. 345, 352, 353, 535, 551, 552, 564, 565, 233, 234, 263 and artillery regiment 378 are among the military regiments under the Buthidaung-based 15th Military Operations Command.
It has also, since February 9, been attacking the Kyein Chaung border guard police outpost in the north of Maungdaw Township, Friday’s statement added.
The AA has been stepping up offensive attacks on military camps, junta bases and police outposts in Maungdaw, Ann and Myebon townships.
