The Anti-junta Forces Coordination Committee–Mandalay (AFCC-MDY), the Yadanabon University Students' Union and the General Strike Coordination Body (GSCB) issued a joint statement on December 17 expressing deep concern for the safety of Mandalay protest leader Ko Htet Myat Aung, who has been arrested by Myanmar’s military regime.
The statement said junta authorities subjected Ko Htet Myat Aung to severe beatings during his arrest and warned that there are grave concerns for his life.
It added that the military regime would be held responsible for any harm to Ko Htet Myat Aung’s health or life.
The military regime has reportedly issued an arrest warrant for the 24-year-old activist, offering a reward.
Ko Htet Myat Aung is the chair of the Yadanabon University Students' Union and a member of both AFCC-MDY and the GSCB.
He has been a prominent, peaceful voice against military rule and was beaten and arrested by regime forces on December 14 while protesting against the junta’s planned election in Mandalay.
More than 200 people across Myanmar have been arrested for alleged election interference, the junta-appointed minister of home affairs said at a meeting of the Central Committee for Supervision of Election Security on December 16.
