The Arakkha Army (AA) said in a statement on Thursday that the ethnic armed group seized 10 military camps and took control of Taungup in less than three weeks, from November 4 to 24.
The AA seized at least 10 military camps near the No. 5 Military Operations Command in Taungup Township and the University of Taungup during that period, the statement said.
“The AA is capable of seizing the remaining towns in a short period of time,” said a military observer in Arakan State. “The AA’s attempt to capture Kyaukphyu and Sittwe may take some time as they have both military advantages and disadvantages. In any case, if the AA can capture the four townships, it will be an advantage for the ethnic armed group and will give it military dominance.”
The AA intensified its offensive against the military on November 4 after a long siege of Taungup. The AA has so far seized control of 11 towns in Arakan State since the latest fighting with the Myanmar military began in November of last year.
The AA said that during the battle for control of Taungup, local residents were evacuated and arrangements were made to minimise civilian casualties.
The AA began attacking the regime’s No. 5 Military Operations Command and Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) Nos. 346 and 544 on November 21, taking control of LIB No. 346 on Wednesday evening, the statement added.
“The regime’s No. 5 Military Operations Command will fall to the AA soon. The regime is responding to the AA attacks with aerial support,” said a source on the ground.
The AA has said it will simultaneously attack junta bases and military camps in the remaining towns held by the regime in Arakan State to capture every single one.
The AA has been stepping up offensive attacks in an effort to seize Maungdaw, Taungup, Ann and Gwa townships in Arakan State and continues to launch an assault on the military’s Border Guard Police Battalion No. 5 in Maungdaw Town, the statement said.
