The Arakkha Army (AA) has reportedly been clearing landmines in northern Arakan State's Maungdaw Township since October 1.

The AA removed 28 landmines in 4th-Mile Ward, Thittaw Village and other locations in Maungdaw Township on October 1, according to local sources.

"Landmines were planted inside homes. Landmines were placed under clothes in some homes in 3rd-Mile Village. Even AA fighters dare not enter the homes to remove the landmines," said a source.

Different types of landmines were found in many locations in downtown Maungdaw where junta soldiers have been stationed, according to sources.

Junta landmines have been planted at locations leading to Maungdaw and Thandwe, as well as near bridges and camps where regime troops were previously stationed, the AA warned in a statement on July 13.

"The AA has so far seized control of most areas in Maungdaw. The AA is currently launching an offensive attack on the military's Border Guard Force Battalion No. 5. The regime carries out aerial bombardments on areas held by the AA on a daily basis," said a resident of Maungdaw.

In a statement on September 27, the AA indicated its intent to escalate attacks on the military's Border Guard Force (BGF) No. 5, the last standing junta battalion in besieged Maungdaw.

Civilian casualties were reported as junta soldiers planted landmines along downtown roads and inside homes after the regime lost towns in Arakan State to the AA.
