Paddy fields in Thayettapin, Mahamuni and TaungOo villages in Kyauktaw Township were destroyed by flooding triggered by heavy rains on August 6, adding to recent troubles facing farmers in water-logged fields across a large swath of Arakan State.
Thousands of acres of farmland in Arakan State's Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U and Minbya townships were inundated by floodwaters last week, according to local farmers.
After the waters receded, paddy fields were left covered in mud and many were crops were damaged irrecoverably, and significant amounts of stored paddy were also lost to the wet weather.
Farmers say they will struggle to replant the paddy fields that were lost due to the soaring costs of agricultural inputs including fertiliser and fuel.
