Flooding causes widespread damage in Myebon, Ann townships

Nearly 50 villages in Myebon and Ann townships, Arakan State, have been inundated by flooding triggered by heavy rain and mountain torrents over recent days.

Floodwaters rose rapidly between August 5 and August 7 as mountain runoff combined with high tides, forcing residents to evacuate to safer areas.

Although the floodwaters have begun to recede, social relief worker Venerable Thabawa Nadi said extensive damage to farmland is expected, along with losses of livestock, including cattle, pigs and poultry.

"The water rose rapidly at around 2 a.m. because of mountain torrents. Local residents had no time to prepare, and household belongings were swept away by the current. Domestic animals died, and large areas of farmland were buried under silt and mud," Venerable Thabawa Nadi explained.

Residents are now struggling to clear thick layers of mud from their homes by hand and are in urgent need of water pumps and spraying equipment.

Flood-affected communities are also facing difficulties preparing food, while concerns are growing over mosquito-borne diseases as stagnant water and mud create breeding grounds, highlighting the need for healthcare assistance.

"As daily wage earners, we barely make ends meet, so rebuilding our home is not easy. We had only just managed to rebuild after last year's flooding. Now it has been destroyed again, and rebuilding seems impossible. At the moment, we are staying at a neighbour's house. With six family members, it is difficult and embarrassing to depend on someone else's home," said a woman from Yetchaung Village in Myebon Township whose house was destroyed by the flooding.

A bridge on the main Ann-Myebon Road was also damaged by the torrents, disrupting transport.

In July, heavy rainfall also caused widespread flooding across 10 townships in Arakan State, affecting hundreds of thousands of people and damaging farmland, crop fields and small-scale livestock farms.
