Three people were killed and three others were wounded in a shooting at the railroad tracks near Sittwe University in Mingan Ward on Saturday afternoon.
The bodies of the deceased and those injured have reportedly been transferred to Sittwe General Hospital following the shooting.
“Three people were admitted to Sittwe Hospital. Six people were involved in the incident and three people were killed. The shooting occurred near a junction in Sittwe’s Mingan Ward,” a source told DMG on condition of anonymity.
Gunmen opened fire on a group of people traveling by car, riddling the front and side windows of the vehicle with bullets. Residents near the scene said they heard about five gunshots.
“The condition of the injured is considered not life-threatening. They [the injured] received gunshot wounds to their legs. The three deceased were reportedly sent to Sittwe Hospital’s morgue,” said a local resident.
The sound of gunfire has induced fear among local residents, and the junta has tightened security at an entrance gate to Sittwe and the Kyauktan security checkpoint.
