The Embassy of the United State of America in Myanmar stated on September 25, said that the possible terrorist attacks could happen in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay and warned people to maintain vigilant security.
A security alert posted on the US Embassy website, cautioned that the attacks could happen continuously on September 16 or 26 and October 16 or 26, according to the investigation of Myanmar security forces.
The embassy also urged to keep up security awareness, to watch the news from the news agencies, and to share the embassy’s warnings with friends and relatives.
The letter issued by the President’s Office on September 16, which went viral on social media, said that northern alliance armed groups Arakan Army (AA), Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the groups which have signed for Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement - Chin National Front (CNF) and Karen National Union (KNU), and the group which the government was still investigating, were planning to carry out bombings and warned the people to be alert.
The letter also mentioned that AA, KIA, CNF and KNU held a meeting at Mae Hong Son Province in Thailand and set the date on September 16 or 26 and October 16 or 26 to carry out bomb attacks in Nay Pyi Taw council territory. The reason was to divert the attention and reduce the pressure because fights have been going on between Tatmadaw and ethnic armed groups in Kachin, Arakan and Northern Shan States.
The northern alliance groups and other ethnic armed groups which have signed for NCA denied the letter.
Locals said that they saw a large amount of the government’s security troops in Nay Pyi Taw council territory on September 26 morning but they left in the afternoon.
Political pundits said that the news about the attacks in three main cities could be disinformation or wild gossip created to make people feel uneasy.
