Junta soldiers abducted an internally displaced person (IDP) from Simaw Village, part of Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township, on Saturday morning, according to local residents.
U Wai Tin Aung, 32, was taken from his home by about 60 junta soldiers at around 7 a.m. on April 6.
“Local people from Simaw Village fled to other villages, but some returned home to do some things. He [Ko Wai Tin Aung] was arrested while he was returning home,” said another Simaw villager.
Thousands of local people from several villages in Kyaukphyu Township such as Simaw, Kanchaing, Zaichaung, Thaingchaung, Uchay and Kalabar were displaced by clashes near the villages on March 14.
U Wai Tin Aung is currently being detained at the Danyawadi naval base in Kyaukphyu, according to local people. He makes a living as an odd-job worker and the reason for his arrest remains unknown, said his wife Daw Than Khin Shwe.
“I have five children and I don’t know how I’ll make ends meet,” she added.
Simaw Village is located about one mile from Danyawadi naval base and the military clashed with the Arakan Army (AA) near the village in January.
The Humanitarian and Development Coordination Office (HDCO) said in a statement that the military regime detained 471 civilians in Arakan State during four months from November 13, 2023, to March 21, 2024.
