The High Court of Arakan State dismissed an appeal of Dr Aye Maung and author Wai Hun Aung, who were sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for high treason and incitement, on May 21, according to the lawyer of Dr Aye Maung.

“The court dismissed an appeal of Dr Aye Maung at the High Court level for submitting the appeal. The court have to decide if they accept it or not, however they did not give any reason so they dismissed it,” said U Kyaw Nyunt Maung, lawyer of Dr Aye Maung.

The lawyer said that they have a plan to appeal to the Supreme Court of the Union.

“We are not satisfied. Honestly, the High Court of Arakan State made the wrong decision. So, we have planned to appeal to the Supreme Court of the Union,” the lawyer said.

Sittwe district court ordered 20 years imprisonment for Dr Aye Maung and author Wai Hun Aung for two cases on March 19.

Since they were not satisfied with the verdict of the Sittwe district court, they appealed to the High Court of Arakan State on March 28.

The duo was charged for their remarks in a public event commemorating the fall of the Arakan Kingdom to the Konbaung dynasty held in Rathedaung in January 2018.

Recently, they were forced to transfer from Sittwe prison to Insein prison in April. They were not included in the President’s amnesty pardon, which augmented fierce criticism among Arakanese people.
