The Arakkha Army (AA) attacked the military’s Buthidaung-based Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 565 with drones on the afternoon of April 24 and fighting continued to intensify on Thursday.
“Fierce fighting was reported near LIB 565 yesterday. The regime carried out airstrikes and the No. 15 Military Operations Command fired mortar shells into the AA positions. The sound of heavy weapons is still heard. The fighting forced locals near the junta battalion to flee,” said a local resident in Buthidaung.
LIB Nos. 345, 352, 353, 535, 551, 552, 564, 565, 233, 234. and 263, and artillery regiment 378 are among the military regiments under the Buthidaung-based 15th Military Operations Command. Of the military regiments, LIBs 552 and 564 were completely seized by the AA.
“I think the AA is taking time to attack the Myanmar military regiments in Buthidaung. … There are many battalions in Buthidaung, so the battle to capture it may take a long time,” said one politician.
In his message marking the 15th anniversary of the founding of the AA on April 10, AA chief Twan Mrat Naing urged residents in Arakan State to brace for the decisive battle in the state.
The AA has seized nine towns in Arakan State and neighbouring Chin State since latest fighting on November 13 and ramps up attacks on the military in Buthidaung, Maungdaw, Ann, Taungup and Thandwe townships.
