Having lost several battalions, a military headquarters and police outposts in Maungdaw Township due to offensive attacks launched by the Arakkha Army (AA), Myanmar’s military regime has blown up three bridges in three days.
Junta soldiers from the Myo Thu Gyi Village-based No. 5 Border Guard Force headquarters blew up a bridge near Zula Village in Maungdaw Township on the morning of May 8.
“The bridge is very important to local people along the Kyee Kan Pyin road. Junta soldiers blew up the bridge early this morning. The regime is destroying important bridges used by local people one by one,” said a resident in Maungdaw.
Around 30 junta soldiers blew up the Thihoaye Bridge near 3rd-Mile Village on the evening of May 7. In addition, a bridge linking Hla Phoe Khaung Village to Maungdaw was blown up by junta soldiers on May 6.
“Buthidaung and Maungdaw will fall to the AA soon. The regime destroyed the bridges in a bid to prevent Arakkha Army (AA) troops from advancing on the town and transporting food items into the border town. I think the regime will not be able to stop the AA’s offensive attacks,” said a military analyst.
As roads and bridges connecting the area are being destroyed, locals say there are transportation difficulties and the flow of goods is being hindered.
The regime also blew up the Panzin Chaung Bridge on May 6 and a bridge linking Gone Nar and Sin Oh Pyin villages in Buthidaung Township on April 25, disrupting communications.
Fighting between the military and AA is escalating as the AA is stepping up attacks on junta BGF battalions and military camps in an effort to control the entire Maungdaw region.
