Minbya man loses leg in landmine explosion
In the past it was almost exclusively the rural parts of Arakan State that needed to worry about landmines, but these days urban dwellers are also worried about the risk.

A local man in Minbya, Arakan State, was severely injured on Friday morning in a landmine blast near a police station, losing one of his legs.
The 39-year-old victim has been identified as U Oo Kyaw Maung, who stepped on a landmine after his bicycle fell near the fence of the police station at about 11 a.m. on December 15.
“He was severely injured in a landmine explosion. He lost his right leg after he stepped on a landmine. He is said to be in critical condition,” said a family member.
The victim initially received emergency medical treatment at Minbya Hospital and was subsequently transferred to Mrauk-U Hospital.
In the past it was almost exclusively the rural parts of Arakan State that needed to worry about landmines, but these days urban dwellers are also worried about the risk.
“Even in the urban areas, there are landmine blasts, which is quite worrying for us. We are concerned for our safety due to reported casualties from landmine explosions,” said a local woman in Minbya.
An administrator from Meetaik Village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, was severely injured on Thursday evening in a landmine explosion near a Border Guard Force outpost abandoned by junta soldiers, and lost one of his legs.
