The Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Office on September 25 approved requests from three lawmakers to resign as members of the 2008 Constitutional Amendment Committee.
U Aung Kyaw Zan, member of Pyithu Hluttaw from Pauktaw township of Arakan National Party (ANP), U Myint Naing, a member of the Amyotha Hluttaw from Kyauktaw Township who also represents the ANP, and U Sein Win, the independent Pyithu Hluttaw representative from Maubin constituency in Ayeyarwady Region, submitted their resignations on September 2 and 3.
U MyintNaing said that they haven’t received any official notification of being allowed to resign from the committee.
“We don’t know yet whether we are allowed to resign. We haven’t received any letter yet,” he said.
2008 Constitutional Amendment Committee was founded with 45 members. However, the ANP said that decisions were made by the voting system, and the proposals made by the most powerful party always received the highest number of votes. That meant ANP and other parties weren’t able to make decision on what they wanted to amend.
Daw Aye Nu Sein, a spokesperson of the ANP, said that the two committee members from ANP have resigned according to the decision of the party’s central committee.
“We have realized that we won’t be able to create the situation we want by participating in this group. Our proposal and needs won’t be considered by the party that has the highest voting numbers. That is why we submitted resignation letters asking not to take part in the committee anymore,” she said.
The report to amend 3,766 points in the 2008 Constitutional has been submitted to Hluttaw and accepted. Out of the total, the ANP proposed to amend 858 points.
The 2008 Constitutional Amendment Committee includes 18 representatives from the National League for Democracy (NLD), 8 representatives from Tatmadaw, and the remaining members are from other political parties and independent representatives. Currently, three members resigned from the committee.
