Clashes are intensifying in Indaw Township, Katha District, Sagaing Region, between junta troops and resistance forces led by the Arakan Army (AA), according to local and military sources.
Fierce fighting has broken out in recent days near villages surrounding Indaw Town.
“About four days ago, intense clashes occurred near Thetkelkyin Village. Four junta soldiers were killed, and some weapons and ammunition were seized. The resistance forces also captured a prisoner of war and completely seized the camp stationed in the village,” a military source on the ground said.
Regime forces have taken positions inside Indaw Town, while the Arakan Army and allied troops are reportedly positioned near Nat Mahoke Kalay Village.
The Arakan Army and allied forces captured a junta camp stationed in Nat Mahoke Kalay Village on 13 May, and sources said they are continuing efforts to gain control of Indaw Town.
Local residents said the military situation on the ground is likely to remain tense as the regime advances reinforcement columns from Htigyaing and Katha townships toward the clash sites.
“Y-12 aircraft are conducting reconnaissance almost every day. As for jet fighters, they usually arrive only when they suffer heavy losses. Since junta troops are launching offensives, clashes are happening nearly every day,” a resident of Indaw said.
In the battles, the Arakan Army, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the Bamar People’s Liberation Army, and forces under the National Unity Government (NUG) are fighting against regime troops.
Indaw Town, located in the upper Sagaing Region bordering Kachin State, holds strategic military importance.
Resistance forces under the KIA and NUG, along with the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF), captured Indaw Town on 7 April 2025.
Following subsequent fierce clashes, the regime recaptured and regained control of Indaw Town on 30 April 2026.
