Sixteen people including at least one child were killed and five others were injured on Monday in a junta airstrike on Tanhlwe Ywama Town, part of Arakan State's Taungup Township.
The civilian casualties were reported after a Y-12 military aircraft dropped three bombs on Tanhlwe Ywama's Ward 4 on the night of October 7.
"There are still some bodies that have not been found. It is not yet known how many people are missing. At least 16 people were killed in the regime airstrike," said a local resident.
The deceased ranged in age from a 6-year-old boy to a 70-year-old man, and included at least five women. Three of the bodies recovered from the rubble had not been identified as of press time.
The injured civilians are being treated at nearby clinics and a search operation for those reported missing is underway.
"The regime has been bombing civilian areas in recent days. Some residents in Tanhlwe Ywama Town have gone into hiding for fear of the junta airstrikes. Some people fled to safer locations," said a local man in Taungup.
In addition to the local population, Tanhlwe Ywama Town hosts hundreds of people displaced by fighting elsewhere in Taungup Township.
The regime has bombed Tanhlwe Ywama Town repeatedly in the past, resulting in dozens of civilian casualties.
Two people including a child were killed and three others were injured in a junta air attack on Tanhlwe Ywama Town on September 24. Junta airstrikes caused at least 50 civilian casualties in Taungup Township from September 24 to October 7.
