Daw Than Than Swe, deputy governor of the junta-controlled Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM), was reportedly shot at her residence in Yangon’s Bahan Township on Thursday.
Unknown assailants opened fire on Daw Than Than Swe at the Shwe Gon Yeik Mon Housing Estate in Myanmar’s commercial capital and largest city, according to a resident.
“I heard gunshots in the morning. I don’t know who came and attacked her,” the unnamed resident added.
Conflicting reports have emerged about the CBM official’s health status, some saying Daw Than Than Swe was killed in the attack and others indicating that she has been hospitalised and is receiving treatment.
A local resident in Bahan Township said military and police personnel carried out a security sweep of the housing estate shortly after the shooting.
“The military and police came to the scene of the shooting and conducted a search operation near the Shwe Gon Yeik Mon Housing Estate soon after the vice governor of the CBM was shot,” the Bahan resident told DMG.
A Yangon-based group that claims allegiance to the anti-junta National Unity Government posted a statement to its Facebook page claiming responsibility for Thursday’s shooting.
