Enquiry team looks into Kyauktan village shootout incident

They carried out inspections on May 29 by meeting with local residents in Kyauktan village. Pyithu Hluttaw representative Daw Khin Saw Wai, State MP U Than Naing and U Tin Maung Win were also involved in the probe.

An investigation team headed by members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission arrived at Sittwe on May 27 to conduct field inspections about a case in Kyauktan village, Rathedaung Township in early May.

U Yu Lwin Aung and Dr Myint Kyi headed the team and met with eight detained people from Kyauktan village at the police station at Yeiktha on May 28 to ask about the gunfire in Kyauktan village.

They carried out inspections on May 29 by meeting with local residents in Kyauktan village. Pyithu Hluttaw representative Daw Khin Saw Wai, State MP U Than Naing and U Tin Maung Win were also involved in the probe.

They also visited Shwe Kyin monastery in Rathedaung Town to meet with displaced people from Yay Soe Chaung village. The team also summoned Kyauktan villagers to the General Administration Office in Rathedaung Town and recorded what they said.

On May 30, the team met with the relevant battalion commander and eight military officers who served their duty in Kyauktan village and eleven villagers who are family members of villagers who died during the gunfight in Kyauktan village.

The investigation team will make recommendations based on their findings during their field inspection and will send the recommendations to the proper authorities.
