A local woman was killed after an artillery shell fired by the military’s Light Infantry Battalion No. 234 fell and exploded in Donechaung Village, part of Arakan State’s Buthidaung Township, on Tuesday, according to local residents.
The 36-year-old victim, identified as Daw Ma Mya Win, died on the spot after a mortar shell landed and exploded in the village while she was at her home on April 30.
“The military’s LIB 234 fired four mortar shells into the village and one of the shells landed and exploded in the village. She sustained shrapnel wounds to her chest and was pronounced dead on the spot,” said a local resident in Buthidaung.
The Arakkha Army (AA) has been stepping up assaults on Myanmar military camps in Buthidaung Township, with the regime using its army, navy and air forces to respond to the AA’s attack.
“Fighting is reported in Buthidaung Township on a daily basis. The fighting seems to be intensifying day by day,” said another Buthidaung resident.
Buthidaung Township is home to 15th regional operations command, and eight light infantry battalions — 345, 352, 353, 535, 551, 552, 564, and 565 — as well as three infantry battalions— 233, 234 and 263 — and artillery battalion 378. The AA has seized battalions 552 and 564.
Civilian casualties are on the rise as the regime increasingly fires heavy weapons and carries out airstrikes on towns held by the AA and towns where fighting is intensifying.
At least sixteen civilians were killed and 69 others were injured by the junta shellings and airstrikes in Arakan State last month and the death toll could be higher on the ground, according to a DMG tally.
