A woman infected with Covid-19 and receiving medical treatment at Maungdaw District People’s Hospital has suffered nerve damage and is reportedly unable to speak.
“It is true. She is unable to speak but is not in critical condition,” said Dr. Nu Kaythi San, medical superintendent of the Maungdaw District People’s Hospital.
The 38-year-old woman, whose condition has been described as similar to a post-stroke patient, is the wife of a police officer from the No. 46 Anti-Narcotics Squad.
The woman was admitted to Maungdaw District People’s Hospital upon testing positive for Covid-19, after she fell ill and lost her sense of smell on June 24. She continues to receive treatment at the hospital.
It was determined that the patient did not need to be transferred to Sittwe General Hospital, and further examination confirmed that she had symptoms of pneumonia. According to a general practitioner, the woman was unable to speak fluently and could not move her right arm properly, but was able to walk.
Up to 24 people infected with the virus are being treated at Maungdaw District People’s Hospital, and the Thiri Mingalar Hall in Maungdaw is being converted into a temporary hospital due to insufficient space.
The Maungdaw District People’s Hospital has instructed locals in Maungdaw Township to wear a mask when they go out due to the rapid spread of the virus and a rising case count in Arakan State.
