Healthcare worker tests positive for Covid-19 in Maungdaw Twsp

A healthcare worker in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, tested positive for Covid-19 on December 30. 

The female healthcare worker from the Department of Public Health (DPH) is currently receiving medical treatment at hospital, said Dr. Nu Kathi San, medical superintendent of Maungdaw Hospital. 

“The virus patient is in good health and she is a midwife,” Dr. Nu Kathi San told DMG. 

Up to 37 cases of Covid-19 were reported in Arakan State between November 30 and December 16, border traders and air travellers among them, according to data released by Arakan State Covid-19 Watch. 

Fifteen boatmen who returned from Bangladesh were found to have been diagnosed with Covid-19 and 11 air travellers tested positive for the virus from December 1-16. Nine people in Sittwe who returned from border trading in Bangladesh and another two people who were air passengers tested positive for the virus on November 30. 

“The spread of the virus has been steadily on the rise,” said Saw San Nyein Thu, chairwoman of the Rakhaing Women’s Initiative Organization. “I think the main problem is related to the negligence of the people.” 

The cluster of infections in Arakan State comes as the new Omicron variant continues day by day to claim a larger share of total Covid-19 cases globally.  

Four Myanmar citizens returning from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, were found to have been infected with the Omicron variant, according to a statement released by the junta-controlled Health Ministry on December 28.
