Junta airstrike kills woman, injures another in Werathani

A junta fighter jet launched airstrikes on Taungphu Village in Werathani Township, Arakan State, early on September 21, killing a local woman and injuring another, according to local sources.

The airstrikes occurred at around 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Bombs landed and exploded near the village monastery and Taungphu Pagoda, resulting in civilian casualties.

"Airstrikes are occurring repeatedly in this area," a local resident said. "In the Taungphu Village attack, one woman was killed and another was injured."

The victim who died was identified as 34-year-old Daw Win Myat Aye, who suffered fatal head injuries. Daw Aye Khin Thein, 42, sustained a wound to her right shoulder.

Werathani Township, situated directly across the water from Sittwe, is under the control of the Arakan Army. Military junta forces based in Sittwe launch daily strikes against the township using air power, naval vessels, and heavy artillery.

"As the military regime is suffering heavy losses in the Sittwe clashes, it is bombing nearby villages in Werathani, Rathedaung, and Ponnagyun townships," another local resident said. "Areas close to Sittwe face high risks from airstrikes right now, requiring extreme caution."

Junta forces have also intensified naval operations and launched heavy artillery and airstrikes along the border between Sittwe and Werathani townships.

In recent days, the military regime launched a multi-axis offensive dubbed "Operation 4926" against Ponnagyun Township using ground, naval, and air forces from Sittwe. However, junta troops suffered setbacks and were forced to retreat.

During that operation, the Arakan Army captured military junta casualties, prisoners of war, and a substantial quantity of weapons and ammunition, according to a statement released yesterday.

In a separate incident on September 20, junta heavy artillery strikes targeted Zeekaing Village on Mosel Island in Rathedaung Township, killing two local women.
