Junta airstrikes on four Arakan townships leave more than 100 civilian casualties

Facing widespread military setbacks across Arakan State, the military regime launched airstrikes targeting four townships in a single day on September 28.

The aerial bombardments resulted in more than 100 civilian casualties across Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun, Anjanapura, and Thandwe townships.

Shortly after 12:00 p.m. on September 28, a junta jet fighter dropped two bombs near the Kispanadi Bridge and India Market in Kyauktaw Town.

“Two 500-pound bombs were dropped while the market was packed with people. The casualty toll is extremely high, and local residents in Kyauktaw are fleeing to safer areas,” a local female resident in Kyauktaw said.

The United League of Arakan (ULA) released a statement confirming that 49 civilians were killed and 58 others injured in the Kyauktaw attack, warning that casualty figures are expected to rise further.

In Anjanapura Township, a military Y-12 aircraft bombed Sunye Village around 7:00 a.m. on September 28, injuring eight local residents. Locals reported that a single Y-12 aircraft dropped three bombs on Sunye Village, destroying several homes.

“The military regime dropped bombs using a Y-12 aircraft. Local residents remain in a state of high fear,” a local male resident said.

The injured civilians were identified as Ma Aye Kyawt May, 29; Ma Kyawt Win, 28; Daw Aye Win Thein, 45; Daw Mar Mar Aye, 43; U Maung Oo Phyu, 70; Maung Phyo Wai Lin, 13; Ma Pyone Pyone, 22; and Maung Zaw Myo Oo, 16.

As continuous military air raids strike Arakan State, civilian casualties continue to mount, leaving local populations in constant fear of aerial attacks.

“With daily, consecutive airstrikes taking place, fear among the public is extremely high,” prominent Arakanese writer Wai Hun Aung said. “Given international human rights standards, values, and norms regarding human dignity, effective action ought to be taken against such a brutal military regime.”

Meanwhile, intense fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and junta troops continues near the Sittwe-Ponnagyun border. Military aircraft launched airstrikes near Auyama Village and surrounding areas in Ponnagyun Township at around 10:00 a.m. on September 28.

Additionally, a junta jet fighter bombed Ngapali Beach in Thandwe Town shortly after 11:00 a.m. on September 28.

Active military clashes continue along the Sittwe-Ponnagyun border and across Kyaukphyu Township, with Arakan Army Deputy Chief Dr. Nyo Twan Awng warning that aerial bombardments across Arakan State and adjacent areas are likely to intensify.
