Two children were killed by a lightning strike in Hsintetmaw Village, part of Arakan State’s Pauktaw Township, on May 6 and a young man is unconscious and unable to speak due to a separate lightning strike there.
The two children ranging in age from 10 to 12 were struck dead while they were playing in a creek west of the village. Ko Kyaw Hla Chay, 27, was involved in a separate lightning strike nearby, a local said.
“A child was struck by lightning and fell down first. When another child dragged him, they both died. Then a person working near that place was knocked unconscious by a lightning strike and was unable to speak when he regained consciousness,” the local explained.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), lightning strikes are common during the early and late monsoons and are caused by high temperatures and cloud formation.
U Hla Tun, director of the DMH, told DMG that people should stay away from water and electricity in case of rain and lightning conditions.
“People must be careful if rain clouds develop. If they see lightning flashing, they must stay away from electrical appliances and water. If a person is alone in an open field, the risk of getting struck is high,” he added.
