Three local people were reportedly injured after a junta jet fighter bombed Maungdaw, Arakan State, at around 3 p.m. on Thursday.
U Ba Hla, U Tun Tun and U Kyaw Maung from Maungdaw’s Wimala Ward were injured in the regime airstrike while they were inside a home.
“A junta jet fighter dropped multiple bombs on Maungdaw yesterday. One of the bombs hit a home in front of a school in Wimala Ward, wounding three people. Two of them sustained severe injuries and their conditions are considered life-threatening,” said a source.
Some homes near Myoma Market and Wimala Ward were reduced to ashes in the junta attack on August 22, said a resident of Maungdaw.
“Some homes near Myoma Market and Wimala Ward were burned to the ground in the regime attack yesterday. I don’t know the extent of damage as I dare not enter Maungdaw. Fighting was reported in downtown Maungdaw on Friday,” the Maungdaw resident added.
It has been nearly two months since the Arakkha Army (AA) launched an offensive against the military in an attempt to seize the entire township of Maungdaw on June 16, and fighting has continued to escalate in the weeks since.
The regime has responded to the AA attacks with aerial and artillery support, and by joining hands with the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), and Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA). There are reports that some junta soldiers have fled to Bangladesh during the clashes.
The AA has reportedly evacuated thousands of local people who were trapped by fighting between the military and AA forces in Maungdaw Town and nearby villages since August 7. Some locals remain trapped in Maungdaw for various reasons.
