The sound of heavy weapons fire was heard southwest of Mingala Nyunt village in northern Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, on Friday afternoon, residents said.
The apparent artillery fire lasted about 30 minutes, but it is not known which armed group was responsible for it, a resident of Mingala Nyunt told DMG.
“There was no fighting here in the past. Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army members are moving there. The Border Guard Force base is located three miles from Mai Sari Taw. I don’t know if it was a clash or not,” he said.
A resident of Min Khamaung village, who asked for anonymity for security reasons, said the sound of artillery shells was heard near her village, which is located in close proximity to the village of Mai Sari Taw.
“We heard the sound of heavy weapons. We do not know who did it,” she said.
On Friday morning, a clash broke out near Wai Lar Taung village and Mile Post 45 of the border fence with Bangladesh, near Khamaung Seik village in northern Maungdaw Township, with the fighting reportedly lasting about 30 minutes.
DMG called Colonel Kyaw Thura, Arakan State minister for Security and Border Affairs, seeking comment on the fighting of February 4, but an unidentified individual who picked up the phone said the minister was “with a convoy of his superiors.”
