A local man was killed and one other was injured after a mortar shell fired by the Myanmar Navy landed and exploded near Thayetpinkwin Village, part of Arakan State’s Thandwe Township, on Monday evening.
Civilian casualties were reported after an artillery shell fired from the Maung Shwe Lay naval base about 20 miles from Thandwe fell and exploded near the village on the evening of July 22.
“The Myanmar Navy fired multiple mortar shells into the village yesterday evening. A local farmer was wounded and one other was killed in the regime shelling,” said a Thandwe resident.
Additional details about the victims were not known as of press time. Local people from some villages along the Zalun-Thabu Chiang road were forced to flee their homes due to the junta artillery attacks.
An artillery shell fired by junta troops also landed and exploded near Madawsam Village on July 22, locals said.
“The regime frequently fires mortar shells into residential areas. Around four mortar shells fired by the military landed and exploded near the village, but no one was injured. We are currently taking shelter in a safe location,” said a local woman from Madawsam Village.
Civilian casualties continue to rise amid the battle for control of Thandwe due to the regime’s artillery attacks and airstrikes. Five local people including a pregnant woman from Abel Village and two others from Jeittaw Village were killed in a junta artillery assault on July 19.
Nearly 160 civilian casualties were reported by junta gunshots, shellings, airstrikes, and landmine blasts during three months of fighting in Thandwe, according to a DMG tally, though the actual number of civilians killed and injured is likely higher on the ground.
