The monitoring group Progressive Voice released a report on Monday stating that the regime has carried out airstrikes on 251 schools across the country during the five years since the coup. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of 276 students and teachers, while 686 others sustained injuries.
According to Progressive Voice, the fatalities include children under the age of 10. Students and teachers lost their lives instantly when aircraft dropped bombs on schools while classes were in session.
Over the past five years, Sagaing Region has suffered the highest number of airstrikes with 58 schools targeted. Arakan State follows as the second hardest-hit region with 30 schools bombed, while a total of 160 schools across Magway Region, northern Shan, Kayin, and Chin States were also attacked, according to the statement.
"As a consequence of these bombings, parents who lost their children, as well as surviving children and adults who witnessed these events, continue to suffer from immense psychological trauma to this day," Progressive Voice stated.
The report clarified that the figure of 251 schools refers specifically to those targeted by aerial bombings and does not yet include schools attacked by heavy artillery, drones, or other means.
Progressive Voice asserted that these actions demonstrate the extent of the regime's mass killings of civilians, including children and women, and serve as evidence of violations of International Humanitarian Law and the commission of war crimes.
As a result of the regime's aerial bombardments, children’s right to education is being threatened, and many are losing their lives.
"It is deeply saddening that innocent children have died in mass within their classrooms or have been left disabled due to the regime's inhumane actions. These lives were lost because of a regime that holds no value for human rights and treats them with utter contempt. I absolutely condemn such actions by the regime," said a human rights activist in Arakan State.
Progressive Voice has called on the international community to take decisive action and impose sanctions specifically targeting the entire aviation fuel supply chain to the regime, as it continues to brazenly commit war crimes across the nation.
