Over 1,000 Myanmar migrant workers made redundant in Thailand

More than 1,000 Myanmar migrant labourers working in Thailand under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Myanmar and Thai governments were laid off on Saturday, according to the workers.

They were working at Cal-Comp Electronic Public Co Ltd in Samut Sakhon Province near Bangkok. Redundancy notices were issued to 1,050 Myanmar workers on March 31.

“We only arrived here less than a year ago,” said one Myanmar migrant worker who asked for anonymity. “The company gave us one month’s salary as a redundancy payment. But after paying the bills, we will not be able to survive long with that money, until we find a new job.” 

The Thailand-based Aid Alliance Committee is currently assisting the axed Myanmar migrant workers. 

Said U Ye Min of the AAC: “Those who were made redundant started to work at the factory only one to two years ago. The factory gave them one month’s salary. But it is not OK for the workers. We are negotiating with Thai authorities.”

Monthly, more than 1,000 Myanmar migrant workers are leaving for Thailand under the MoU signed between the two governments.

Driven by high unemployment largely triggered by post-coup economic turmoil, many are leaving Myanmar for better economic prospects overseas.
