Two women were killed and about 20 others injured when the military junta bombed downtown Paletwa, Chin State — under the control of the Arakan Army (AA) — at around 12:30 p.m. today.
The junta carried out the attack with a jet fighter, dropping two 500-pound bombs and a cluster bomb. The strikes hit near Paletwa Hospital, the Bawlte quarter, and surrounding areas.
“They dropped two 500-pound bombs and a cluster bomb. Two women have died. Many others were injured, some of them critically,” said one local resident.
The deceased were identified as Daw Thu Zar Win, 40, and Ma Myo Myo Khin, 18.
The injured are receiving emergency medical treatment, with several reported to be in life-threatening condition.
The AA seized control of Paletwa Township in January 2024 and has since been administering governance and judicial functions there.
“Now people in the town are very worried. AA has been administering for over a year, and we had never experienced something like this until today. I see this as the junta deliberately killing innocent civilians,” said another Paletwa resident.
On September 26 and 27, junta airstrikes on residential wards in Taungup and Thandwe killed one civilian and injured five others, among them children.
In recent days, the junta has intensified its aerial attacks on areas under AA control, prompting warnings for residents to remain especially alert to the dangers of airstrikes.
