An elderly man in Pauktawpyin Village, part of Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township, was injured in a junta artillery strike at around 8 a.m. on Monday, villagers said.

The injured man has been identified as U Maung Chan Thar, in his 60s. He sustained shrapnel wounds to his abdomen after a mortar shell fell near a jetty west of Thazi Village on the morning of November 27.

“He received shrapnel wounds to his right abdomen and his condition is considered not life-threatening,” said a local man from Thazi Village.

Local residents have accused the military’s Ponnagyun-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 550 of firing the mortar shell.

Hundreds of local people from Thazi Village and nearby villages have fled to safer locations.

“The military fires heavy weapons into the villages on a daily basis. We fled to safer locations in fear of the junta’s indiscriminate shelling,” said a displaced woman from Letwe Sartaik Village.

DMG phoned junta spokesman Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun regarding the matter, but he could not be reached.

Two local residents from Khamaungdaw and Yeyoepyin villages in Ponnagyun Township, Arakan State, were seriously injured in a drone attack carried out by the military on November 26.

Civilian casualties have been a daily occurrence in Arakan State, and homes and public hospitals have been among the damages due to the junta’s indiscriminate shelling, airstrikes and drone attacks since renewed hostilities between the military and Arakan Army began on November 13.
