Casualties were reported after two passenger buses were shot at near Pulaw town on the Myeik-Dawei road in Tanintharyi Region on Thursday evening, according to local sources.

The passenger buses came under fire near the village of Thithlataw in Pulaw Township, killing three passengers and wounding 18 others, according to social organisations based in Pulaw.

“Two buses from Yadanar Toe and Shweli Yadanar bus lines were shot around 5 p.m. yesterday. We still don’t know which group is responsible for the shooting,” a Pulaw resident said on Friday.

Among the victims killed were a Yangon resident, a Pulaw resident and a Bago resident, said a charity worker who did not want to be named.

“A Pulaw native who had returned from Malaysia and two who came respectively from Yangon and Bago died. Some 18 others were wounded,” he said.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack on the passenger buses.

The Karen National Defense Organization, an armed wing of the Karen National Union (KNU) and local People’s Defence Force (PDF) groups warned last week against travelling on the Myeik-Pulaw-Dawei road, citing recent clashes with junta troops.
