A junta airstrike on Myonepyin Village, part of Arakan State’s Thandwe Township, reportedly injured four local women and a 14-year-old girl at around 1 p.m. on July 2.

The injured have been identified as Ma Yuma Myint Mon, 14, Ma Kyi Phyu Khin, 18, Ma Wai Wai Htwe, 21, Daw Mya Lay Sein, 45, and Daw Thein Han, 76.

“Some injured women are said to be in critical condition. The junta airstrikes have been on the rise in Thandwe Township in recent days,” said another local woman.

The junta carried out the airstrike on Myonepyin Village, located on the Thandwe-Taungup road, without there being any fighting in the area, locals said.

A junta airstrike on Shwe Kyaung Pyin Village in Thandwe Township destroyed a monastery and some homes on June 29.

Local people in Arakan State live in fear and anxiety due to the regime’s airstrikes and artillery attacks on civilian areas.

“People in war zones suffer from physical and mental insecurity,” said a social activist in Arakan State.

Customary international humanitarian law requires any armed organisation to protect civilians and bars them from attacking, abducting or using civilians as human shields or targeting civilian dwellings.

Fighting has been raging in Thandwe Township for more than two months, since the AA launched an assault on junta positions in the township on April 13. Civilian casualties have surpassed 120 due to the regime’s airstrikes and artillery attacks in Thandwe Township.

The AA is currently attacking the military’s Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 55 and 566 in Thandwe Township, with the regime responding to the AA offensive with aerial and naval support.
