Schoolteachers working in the public education system in Arakan State called for collaborative efforts to guarantee their safety on World Teachers Day 2023.
Teachers in Arakan State have expressed concerns for their safety after Daw Hnin Yu Nwe, a 37-year-old female junior assistant teacher from Kyunpaw Pauktaw Village in Rathedaung Township, was killed on September 16. No suspects in the case have been definitely identified.
A high school teacher from Rathedaung Township said: “Female teachers were shocked by the murder of teacher Daw Hnin Yu Nwe. The case has yet to be cracked. We want the truth to be established.”
Teachers have urged both the military regime and the Arakan Army to provide security for them.
“Teachers feel helpless,” said teacher Daw Poe Ei Lwin from Marazaing Island in Kyaukphyu Township. “They don’t know whom they can rely on. Teachers have dedicated their lives to their students.”
U Oo Kyi Hla, a teacher from Shwe Nyo Ma Village on Marazaing Island in Kyaukphyu Township, noted that most teachers survive on a monthly salary of just over 200,000 kyats per month.
“Teachers can only scrape by with their modest salaries. In remote areas, there is a need to provide accommodation for female teachers, and their safety must be guaranteed,” said U Oo Kyi Hla.
Arakan State Education Network joint secretary Daw Mar Mar Win has called on who can do so to provide the necessary support for education staff.
