Six civilians killed, 16 injured in Arakan attacks over 11 days: AA

At least six civilians were killed and 16 others injured in a series of Myanmar military airstrikes and artillery attacks across Arakan State between September 17 and 27, according to a statement released by the Arakan Army (AA) on September 27.

The attacks affected several townships, including Ann, Minbya, Gwa, Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun, Pauktaw, Rathedaung, Thandwe and Mrauk-U, with civilian homes, religious buildings and a school also damaged, the AA said.

The latest attack occurred at around 7:14 a.m. on September 27, when a Y-12 aircraft and fighter jet bombed the area around Lay Ein Su village in Ann Township for nearly half an hour. No civilian casualties were reported, but a cow belonging to a local resident was injured.

A day earlier, a Y-12 aircraft bombed Anjanapura (Minbya) for about 15 minutes, injuring one civilian in the town’s old market quarter.

In Gwa Township, a fighter jet bombed Kyeintali town and Yay Kyaw village on September 25, injuring three civilians in Kyeintali and damaging 13 homes. Monastery buildings and another 11 homes were damaged in Yay Kyaw, while two cattle were killed, according to the AA.

Seven civilians, including two children under the age of 10, were injured when a Y-12 aircraft bombed Kyauktaw and surrounding areas for around 30 minutes on September 24. The AA said nearly 30 bombs were dropped during the attack.

Two civilians were killed in Ponnagyun Township on September 23 when a Y-12 aircraft and two fighter jets bombed Phetkya village. The attack also destroyed 25 homes and killed livestock. The AA said the village had previously been bombed on September 7 and 17.

Pauktaw Township was subjected to repeated attacks on September 20 and 21. Fighter jets bombed Taungphu village and the area around the historic Taungphu Pagoda on September 20, killing one woman and injuring another civilian. A pagoda ordination hall and monastery were also damaged.

The following morning, two fighter jets bombed an area near a school in Taungphu village, damaging school buildings, the AA said.

Three other civilians were killed in separate attacks on September 20. Two were killed when artillery shells struck Zikaing village in Rathedaung Township, while another was killed when a fighter jet bombed Kalachaung village in Ponnagyun Township. Six homes were also destroyed in the latter attack.

Two civilians were injured in another airstrike on Satthwa village in Gwa Township on September 21, while one civilian was injured when three fighter jets bombed areas around Thit Ngote To and Oe Myay villages in Thandwe Township on September 18.

The AA also reported that four fighter jets bombed former military positions in Mrauk-U on September 17, but no civilian casualties were reported in that attack.

The AA accused the military of repeatedly attacking schools, religious buildings, medical facilities, displacement sites and civilian-populated areas across Arakan. DMG could not independently verify all of the incidents and casualty figures in the AA statement.

According to the incidents detailed by the AA, six civilians were killed and 16 injured between September 17 and 27, while dozens of homes and several religious and educational buildings were damaged.
