Covid-19 vaccination campaign continues for students in Arakan State

The Arakan State Education Department has been administering second Covid-19 shots to students in the 5-12 age group since July 2, and 174,214 students had received their second doses as of July 24.

“In terms of percentage, 58.11 percent of students in the 5-12 age group have received the second dose,” Assistant Director U Aung Kyaw Nyein of the Arakan State education office told DMG, adding that the students are receiving their second dose 28 days after receiving their first shot.

A total of 297,582 students had received at least a first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in Arakan State as of July 23, while 43,656 students had yet to receive a first shot.

The students that have yet to receive their first Covid-19 jabs are largely from remote villages, and the department is working to get them vaccinated, said U Aung Kyaw Nyein.

The students are receiving the Chinese-manufactured Sinopharm vaccine. The state public health department is also administering shots for students aged above 12, according to the department’s assistant director, Dr. Soe Win Paing.

Since February, new coronavirus infections have declined dramatically both in Arakan State and across Myanmar. The Ministry of Health said just 15 new cases were reported nationwide on July 25, down from a peak of about 6,000 new infections reported daily at the height of the virus’s worst wave in July of last year.
