It has been nearly two months since the Arakan Army (AA) opened a new military front in Arakan State on November 13, following the launch of ‘Operation 1027’ on October 27.

Twenty-two military camps in neighbouring Chin State’s Paletwa Township, including two tactical command outposts, are among nearly 150 Border Guard Force (BGF) outposts, police stations and other command bases seized by the AA during the latest hostilities in Arakan State and Paletwa.

“In order to make the entire Paletwa area a military regime-free zone, the AA continues to attack the few remaining military camps around the town, and the fighting continues to intensify,” the ethnic armed group said in a statement on January 9.

Fierce clashes were reported between the military and AA near Paletwa on January 9. The military responded to the AA’s offensive with artillery strikes and aerial support.

The AA has launched assaults on military outposts belonging to Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 233, 374, 376, 308, 211, 217, 289 and 220 in Paletwa since January 1.

The conflict has forced thousands of residents in Paletwa to flee and the regime’s administrative offices have reportedly been shuttered for security reasons.

So far at least seven people were killed and 20 others have been injured in Paletwa Township during the latest hostilities, according to a DMG tally.

The regime also conducted airstrikes on some positions near Meewa Village, a border village between Paletwa and Kyauktaw, where a junta tactical command base is being targeted by the AA.
