The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has called on witnesses to share information about the junta airstrike on Mrauk-U Hospital in Arakan State on December 10, Human Rights Day, describing the attack as a war crime.
In a statement, the IIMM said that under international law, healthcare facilities such as hospitals are considered civilian objects and are protected, along with health workers and patients, from attack.
The deliberate targeting of such individuals and locations violates international law and may constitute a war crime, the statement said.
The IIMM added that the airstrike was the deadliest attack on a hospital since the 2021 military coup.
The investigative body said it is seeking information from survivors of the airstrike, health workers and organizations. It is requesting details on casualties, photographs of the damage, information related to the aircraft used, records of weapon fragments, the pilot and others involved in the attack, and whether any evacuation warnings were issued prior to the bombing.
Those with relevant information can contact the Myanmar Mechanism via Signal at +41 76 691 12 08 using disappearing messages, or by sending a Proton Mail email to contact@myanmar-mechanism.org.
The IIMM was established by the UN Human Rights Council in 2018 to collect and analyse information on international crimes and violations of international law committed in Myanmar since 2011.
According to local sources, the military regime dropped two 500-pound bombs on Mrauk-U Hospital at around 9 p.m. on December 10, killing 33 civilians and injuring nearly 80 others who were receiving medical treatment after being displaced from other parts of Arakan State.
International organisations, including the United Nations, have strongly condemned the junta bombing of the hospital.
The military regime has denied carrying out an airstrike on Mrauk-U Hospital, claiming the area was an Arakan Army base. However, victims' families told DMG that the site was a health facility, not an AA base, and that civilians from across Arakan State were receiving treatment there.
Despite condemnation from international organisations, including the United Nations, the military regime has continued air attacks, reportedly bombing the towns of Mrauk-U, Pauktaw, Ponnagyun and Rathedaung on December 12.
