The Grand Jame Mosque (Maungdaw Myoma Mosque), a prominent religious site for Muslims in downtown Maungdaw, Arakan State, was reopened by the United League of Arakan/ Arakan Army (ULA/AA) on September 12, after being closed for more than 13 years.
The reopening ceremony was attended by around 300 people, including local Muslims, religious leaders, officials from the ULA/AA, and members of other communities such as the Daignet, Mro, and Hindus.
The mosque had been closed since 2012 following the outbreak of communal violence during the then-President U Thein Sein administration.
Muslim religious leaders said that the ULA/AA allowed the reopening of the mosque in response to their requests, emphasizing the importance of upholding freedom of religion now that the Arakan Army has taken control of Maungdaw Township.
The reopening of Maungdaw’s Grand Mosque is seen by community members as a landmark moment, restoring not only a place of worship but also a sense of dignity and hope after years of restrictions and uncertainty.
