The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) has reportedly attacked multiple security outposts of the Arakan Army (AA) on the Bangladesh border in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State.

According to local residents, ARSA attacked several AA border security posts in Taungpyo Letwe, Maungdaw Township, and on the border with Bangladesh, on August 10 and 11.

"It's true that there was fighting. The main reason was that ARSA attacked the Taungpyo border posts with superior force," said a local man aware of the situation.

DMG attempted to contact AA spokesperson U Khaing Thukha for details on the attack and the current security situation in the area, but he had not responded as of press time.

Frequent shooting was reported in the area, a border source said, with locals speculating that the AA fought back and some of its troops were killed and injured.

"Since ARSA is fighting with hundreds of troops, there are some casualties on the AA side. We are still investigating the rest," said another local man.

Bangladeshi media reported that clashes between ARSA and AA took place near Taungpyo Letwe town on August 10 and 11.

Although the AA controls Maungdaw Township, ARSA members regularly carry out ambushes and attacks on AA troops, as well as arresting and killing locals.Muslim armed groups currently active in the area include ARSA, the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), the Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA), and the Rohingya Islamic Mahaz.

Locals say there is concern for the security of the Maungdaw region as ARSA members are moving into Arakan State from Bangladesh and jeopardising stability in the border area.
