The Arakan Army (AA) reportedly launched an offensive on a Border Guard Force (BGF) outpost near Kyunpauk Village, part of Arakan State’s Buthidaung Township, on Thursday evening.
The AA attacked the junta BGF outpost at around 4 p.m. on December 21 and the fighting lasted for about 20 minutes as junta soldiers responded to the AA attack with heavy weapons.
“The military fired at least 10 mortar shells when the AA attacked the Kyunpauk BGF outpost. We heard the military’s artillery strikes today,” said a local.
Thousands of locals from Kyunpauk Village and nearby villages fled to safer locations a day prior to the AA attack on the BGF outpost. Those who fled said that mobile phone lines were also cut in the area.
“We don’t know the exact situation in the area because we cannot phone our relatives. The military has cut off the mobile phone services in the area,” said a displaced person from Layeinsu Village.
The Arakan Army occupied four BGF outposts within one month of the latest hostilities in Arakan State, which began on November 13. The AA also seized more than 140 BGF outposts and police stations abandoned by junta troops and two tactical command bases, the ethnic armed group has said.
