Five civilians including a teenager were injured by junta artillery strikes in Kanhtaunggyi town, part of Arakan State’s Myebon Township, on Friday. Two of them remain in critical condition, according to residents.
Shells fired by a junta battalion in Kazu Kaing Village in Ann Township and a naval vessel hit Kanhtaunggyi town at 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Friday. Many residents fled the town following the strikes.
“I heard two of them were seriously injured. Residents dare not return to the town yet,” said a resident of Kanhtaunggyi town.
Four men aged 18, 23 and 42 and a 42-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl were injured.
The 14-year-old girl almost lost her right arm, and the 18-year-old man lost his right leg. They were rushed to a local hospital.
Hospital buildings were damaged and a health worker was injured when a junta jet fighter bombed Kanhtaunggyi town on Sunday.
“Artillery shells landed on the mountain near the village. No one was injured, but villagers have fled after the airstrikes,” said a resident of Lithon Village.
The junta’s Light Infantry Battalion No. 563 and AA troops clashed for a few minutes in the mountains northeast of Lithon Village.
The regime and the AA continue to fight fiercely in Ann Township. The AA has seized Myebon, which neighbours Ann. Civilian casualties have been increasing in Myebon Township due to the junta’s air and artillery strikes.
Five residents in Nyaung Kan Village, Myebon Township, were injured by junta strikes on March 22. On March 23, two residents were killed and one resident was injured in Myebon Township’s Thayet Taung Village.
