The Arakha Army (AA) has been launching attacks on the Tawhein tactical command base near Kazukaing Village in Ann Township since March, with the military responding to the AA’s offensive manoeuvres with heavy weapons including airstrikes.
“The AA attempted to seize the Tawhein tactical command base. If the AA seizes the Tawhein tactical command base, the ethnic armed group will be able to march toward Ann directly. The military is currently resisting the AA’s attacks with airstrikes and artillery attacks,” said a local resident.
Under the No. 5 Military Operations Command, the Tawhein tactical command base is located near the Yangon-Sittwe road about 20 miles west of Ann. Clashes were reported near the Tawhein tactical command base from April 15 to 17.
The regime dropped bombs on the scene of fighting at least three times and the military’s Ann-based Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 371 and 373 fired mortar shells into the area on April 17, another Ann resident said.
“The military fired mortar shells into the hills where AA troops are believed to be stationed. The military also fired heavy weapons into Kazukaing and Darlet villages this morning,” he added.
Fierce fighting followed the AA’s launching of attacks on multiple junta bases and military camps in Ann Township, where the military’s Western Command headquarters is located, on March 24.
Junta soldiers from some military camps in the Darlet Chaung and Mahnyintaung areas retreated from their camps and the AA has been testing the defences of all military camps and junta bases in Ann Township. In a statement on April 13, the ethnic armed group said it has been launching offensive attacks on all junta bases, military camps and Border Guard Force police outposts in Arakan State, warning junta soldiers and police to surrender as soon as possible.
The AA has so far seized control of eight townships in Arakan State as well as Paletwa Township in neighbouring Chin State.
