An elderly man was killed and a teenage girl was injured after mortar shells landed and exploded in Kainggyi Village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, on November 25, according to locals.
The deceased has been identified as U Nay Win, in his 60s from Kainggyi Village, and the 14-year-old injured girl from Thayay Konbaung Village is Ma Aye Soe Wai.
Artillery shells fired by the Myanmar military’s Mawrawati base fell near Kainggyi Village yesterday, locals said.
“He [the deceased] succumbed to shrapnel wounds. Three mortar shells landed near the village,” said a local man from Kainggyi Village.
Ma Aye Soe Wai sustained shrapnel wounds to her left leg while she was at her home at about 6 p.m. on November 25.
“We could not send the injured to the hospital as the junta blocked the road. She is currently being treated by a traditional medicine practitioner and her condition is considered not life-threatening,” said a resident of Thayay Konbaung Village.
Dozens out of 800 residents in Thayay Konbaung Village have reportedly fled to safer locations due to the junta’s shelling.
The AA attacked a BGF outpost near Kainggyi Village at around 8:20 a.m. on November 25, and fierce clashes were reported thereafter as the military fired mortar shells.
More than 300 residents from Kainggyi Village fled to safer locations on November 23 before the AA launched an attack on the BGF outpost. Some people who remain in the village face the risks of junta shelling.
No fighting was reported near Kainggyi Village on the morning of November 26, locals said.
“We didn’t hear gunfire today. We don’t know exactly as to whether the AA has occupied the BGF outpost,” said a local man.
Eight junta soldiers were killed and some were wounded in a clash with the Arakan Army near Kainggyi Village in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, the Three Brotherhood Alliance said in a statement on Friday.
Three mortar shells fired from a junta base in Yaysoechaung Village, Rathedaung Township, fell in Laigwin Village, killing a resident on the spot and wounding four others at about 5 p.m. on November 24.
