A man was killed when a fire tore through his home in Apaukwa Village, part of Arakan State’s Kyauktaw Township, on Friday night.
The 31-year old has been identified as Maung Pyar Chay, a resident of Pawdawmu Ward in Apaukwa Village.
“The fire broke out at 9 p.m.,” said Ko Kyaw Soe Win, a local man. “The fire started from lighting a candle on a plastic chair. Ko Pyar Chay died in the fire because he was drunk and sleeping in the home. The home was reduced to ashes, but the flames did not spread to nearby homes.”
Four family members live in the house, though the rest of the family were not at home at the time the blaze broke out.
There have been frequent fires reported in Arakan State so far this year, prompting authorities to urge residents to be especially careful when using fire.
Arakan State has seen 36 fire outbreaks thus far in 2023, with five deaths, according to data from the Arakan State Fire Service Department. Among the people killed were one each from Ponnagyun, Minbya and Sittwe townships, and two from Kyauktaw Township.
Another fire broke out at Mercedes guesthouse in Sittwe on Saturday morning.
“The guesthouse fire was put out in time,” said Daw Kyawt May, a resident of the Arakan State capital who lives near the guesthouse. “A guest reportedly left the electric fan in the room not turned off, causing an electric shock and a fire.”
The Arakan State Fire Service Department has been educating the public about fire hazards in an effort to reduce outbreaks.
