Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on September 16 announced that heavy rains and strong winds are expected in the coming days across much of the country due to Tropical Storm Noul.
The storm is moving east to west after making landfall in Vietnam on September 17, with the weather system expected to intensify monsoon season rains and wind in Myanmar as it pushes west.
The department said that from September 19-22, heavier rains are forecast for Nay Pyi Taw, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyarwady and Tanintharyi regions, as well as Shan, Arakan, Kayah, Kayin and Mon states.
“The storm will cross Vietnam and Thailand tomorrow [Friday]. So, some clouds from the storm might reach our country and there will be heavy rain and strong wind in some regions and states,” U Kyaw Moe Oo, director general of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, told DMG on September 17.
Flash flooding may accompany heavy rains and preparations should be made at offices to ensure essential documents and equipment are not water-damaged, the DMH warned. It added that natural disaster preventative measures outlined in Emergency Preparedness Plans (EPP) should be undertaken at dams and related facilities that may be vulnerable to flash floods.
